Paiks

Paiks
Hindu infantrymen who served under the sultans in me-dieval India. Under Balban, they came to form a royal guard. Af-ter Kaiqubad's ouster, the paiks rallied around Malik Chajju, ac-cepting from him a betel leaf (tambul) in their familiar ceremony of pledging support. The royal paiks came to play a still more im-portant role under the Khaljis (1290-1320). They saved 'Ala al-Din's life during the failed attempt to kill him by Akat Khan. It was the paiks who killed Malik Kafur in 1316. Khusrau Shah, who had seized the throne after killing Qutb al-Din Mubarak Shah Khalji (1316-1320), was originally a paik. The paiks played an equally important role in the Bengal kingdom. The rise of Raja Ganesh (1415-1418) may be attributed to the support of the royal paiks.
